Exclusive Interview with Philip Martin Brown (Grantly Budgen)
You have been one of the longest actors on the show. How does it feel knowing that only you and Jason (Tom Clarkson) have been there since the start?
I don't think about it until I am reminded. I love the show and care about it but never take it for granted.
Would you say that the show has dramatically changed since it first started in 2006?
It changes all the time and constantly reinvents itself which keeps the show fresh.
What was your view on the move from Rochdale to Scotland? Do you think it's going to be a good move for the show?
At first I was dubious but now I'm convinced it works north of the border. It has again reinvented itself.
Can you tell us anything about the new school/set and what the viewers have to look forward to?
The new school has the river Clyde as a backdrop and much more spare. The stained glass windows remain and in many ways the interior is similar. Lots of exciting and touching stories coming.
Your character Grantly is one of Waterloo Road's favourite's. Does he have some great storylines heading our way for Series 8?
I am about to start filming a great story for Grantly - and Maggie.
That's what we all like to hear. What have you enjoyed the most about playing the character Grantly?
I enjoy playing all facets of Grantly: Sarcasm, wit, how appealing he can b to the kids and the softer side as displayed in the episode's with Fleur.
The Fleur storyline was beautifully done. A true tear jerker - well done. When filming that storyline was it at all emotional to film?
Thank-you. I did some research into Alzheimer's but wasn't emotional during filming. I just try to create an illusion.
Have you ever been given a script and thought: "I really don't want to do this.' If so what scenes was it for?
Being caught in bed with a rent boy in 'Band of gold.'
As an actor. What would you say is the most difficult thing to do to film for a production?
Anything on board a ship as it keeps moving when you don't want it to which makes continuity very difficult. The background is never the same.
Is the move to Scotland making you question your future on the show?
Every year I question my future on Waterloo Road. Scotland is no different.
Is it not hard though when you are so far away from family and friends?
Yes but we are all used to it. My family have never known otherwise. I fly home now so I'll get back more often.
Well that isn't to bad to film then. What is your dream TV show/film to work on?
The next series of Waterloo Road.
Great answer. Dp you have any funny outtakes of Waterloo Road filming that you can share with us?
Mark Benton (Chalky) is a great laugh when filming. He always gives us a good giggle.
Well thank-you very much for chatting to us Philip. So glad you are part of Series 8. Hope all is well and take care.
Thank-you.

Exclusive Interview with Shifaa Arfan (Naseem Siddiqui)
Since Shifaa appeared on our screen playing Naseem Siddiqui - the youngest sister of Tariq and Trudi Siddiqui, she only had a short period of 10 episode's to portray her character to the audience. We got to catch up with Shifaa and had a lovely chat to her about her time on Waterloo Road. Read the interview below:
Where were you and how did you feel when you got told you got the role of Naseem Siddiqui?
I was at home watching re-runs of Desperate Housewives and I got the phone call. It didn't sink in at first then I was screaming with happiness of course and I was super excited to get started.
What was your first day on set filming like? Where you nervous at all?
At first I was really nervous, but then I thought this is a great opportunity don't be nervous Shifaa. I only had one scene that day to film.
Was there anyone on set that you got on with the most?
That was with Aryana who plays Trudi. She was so nice and welcoming, and we became really good friends. She was like a big sister.
What was your most favourite scene to film?
My most favourite scene to film was with me and Aryana (Trudi) were sat outside on the stops and she was telling me she was pregnant. It was a nice hot day and we were sunbathing between takes. It was relaxed and chilled.
Was it difficult to film the fire scene in Naseem's den? I guess it took a lot of stunts? How did you film that?
It wasn't necessarily difficult. Everyone new what they were doing. It was a controlled fire. I had people in there with me. I was out there for a full day and the beginning of the morning of the next day. I was freezing and I came down with a cold afterwards. I guess the clothing I had to wear didn't help, as my costume had to be made from natural products so it wouldn't be too flammable. Other than that it was a fun experience, and a fun two days of filming that scene.
The religion that you portrayed on screen is that your own personal religion? If not. Did you have to research it at first?
Yes that religion is what my family believes, so I didn't have to research it, however I am completely different from my character. I am more laid back when it comes to topics like religion. I am my own person I believe that if you do wrong you go to hell and if you do right you go to heaven.
Was there any moments during filming that when the camera's rolled something funny happened? A blooper?
I remember doing a scene outside with an ambulance and Mark Benton (Daniel Chalk) is just so funny. You can't even look at him without laughing. I was trying to say my lines and he was whispering gibberish in a really creepy voice. I had to bite my cheek to stop me from laughing.
Where you asked to move to Scotland with the show?
No I wasn't. But I wasn't upset about it. I enjoyed my time there and made the most of it. I met some amazing people and still keep in touch with them. In this industry nothing really is set in stone. You have to keep a positive attitude. When one door closes another one opens. That is my motto.
If you did get asked to move to Scotland with your character Naseem. Would you of accepted?
Yes of course. I would have loved to see how Naseem would develop. Also it would have been lovely to work with everyone again.
If you got to control which way Naseem developed. How would you like to see her go?
If I could control that. I'd love for her to have a great sense of humour. to be the one that would make any bad situation funny.
Before you got the role on the show. Did you ever watch Waterloo Road?
I watched the show when it was first out. I stopped watching it when Maxine died. That was so sad. I refused to watch the programme without her, so when I got the call for the first audition. I did my homework and was up to date on all the episodes.
So was Maxine your favourite character? Who else was your favourites?
Maxine, Mika and Brett were my favourite.
Just a few more questions if you don't mind. Do you see yourself continuing to watch the show in Scotland?
Yes definitely to support Katie (Jodi Allen) and my on screen lovely brother Naveed (Tariq Siddiqui)
What was the atmosphere like filming the last couple of scenes in Rochdale? How was everyone's reactions?
At first we were all really happy that it was coming to an end. All the hard work paying off, then it got to the last day and we were all in tears. It's like a massive family. We have fun and for me I was so happy to be a part of it. I know some people were very upset as they have been there for ages so it was emotional saying goodbye to the cast and the crew.
Well Thank-you very much for speaking to us about your role. We never really got much information about Naseem before she was introduced to the show. It's nice to hear this all from yourself. Just before we go. Will we be seeing you in any upcoming productions just yet?
Thank-you very much. It's been a pleasure answering the questions. I am concentrating on finishing my last few weeks in college now but hopefully you'll see me soon in something else.
Well good luck with college and all the best with future productions. You were a great addition to the show and will be missed. Take care.
Thank-you very much.

Exclusive Interview with Rebecca Ryan (Vicki McDonald) - 13.05.2012
We were lucky enough to have a quick chat exclusively to Rebecca, the actress who formerly played Vicki MacDonald. Here's what she had to say...
Morning Rebecca! As we all know, you are a fabulous actress and where fantastic as Vicki in Waterloo Road. But, have you always wanted to be an actress? And if not, what did you aspire to be?
I've been an Irish dancer since I was 4 so if I wasn't acting, all I would want to do is dance.
Obviously everyone on this website will know you as ‘Vicki MacDonald’ but what else have you been in that they may enjoy?
I played Debbie in Shameless for 6 years. I've also had parts in Emmerdale, Casualty, Holby City and Doctors. I'm doing an episode of Monroe too, but I don't know when that will be out. I've also been in quite a few plays.
That's great, but back to Waterloo Road, you played Vicki for two and half series’ in Waterloo Road and had many fabulous storylines. But what was your favourite and why?
I really liked the pregnancy storyline because it was great to get my teeth into and I could do a lot with it.
We loved that one too! What where the people like on set? Who did you get along best with? And do you still keep in touch with former cast members?
Everyone on set was so lovely, I loved meeting everyone. I keep in touch with Linzey Cocker (Jess Fisher) and Ben Ryan Davies (Ronan Burley) the most but I see all the others every now and again.
What about embarrassing stories? Did anything really embarrassing ever happen to you, or others on set?
Erm... no, not that I can really think of.
So we know, in the past, some pupils have returned to the show after leaving. Chelsee Healey, Ben Ryan Davies… but what about you? If given the opportunity, would you consider going back?
I loved every second I was there, it would be nice to go back to see everyone.
Well, we’d definitely love to see you return! Finally, as you know, the final episode filmed in Rochdale was broadcasted last month. How do you feel about the show’s move up to Scotland?
I think it will be as great as it always is! I think it's a really good move.
We totally agree! Well, thanks so much for answering our questions today. We truly loved Vicki on Waterloo Road, and would love to see her back one day! Good luck with everything you’ve got coming up in the near future, you’re going to go far!
Thank you, no worries!

Exclusive Interview with Lauren Thomas (Aleesha Dillon) - 12.05.2012
Lucky enough, we got the chance to speak directly to Lauren Thomas who played Aleesha Dillon in Series 3 and 4 of Waterloo Road. Read the interview below to see what she had to say:
Where were you and how did you find out that you got the part as Aleesha Dillon on the show?
I was at home and I got a call saying that they would love to have me on the show and I was just lost for words. My family was all there and we were all really excited. It was amazing.
Did you ever watch the show before you got the part?
Yes I was a big fan.
Who would you say was your favourite character?
I liked Donte and Chlo's relationship stories and I always loved Janeece's character too.
Well Aleesha and Danielle were said to be the best friendship on the show. Were you and Lucy (Danielle) as close in real life?
Aww really? Yes I lover her. I miss her too. She lives in Liverpool now for Hollyoaks but we still speak and we are meeting up too. She is my fave ginger.
That is good to hear. Would you say that you in person resembles your character Aleesha in any way?
No. I wasn't a bitch or anything like Aleesha. Wait am I allowed to say bitch?
Yes. Have you got any memorable funny stories that you can share with us from your time filming?
Well sounds stupid but everyday was funny apart from the last day which was sad but one time in particular was when I bought a new epilator that said it was pain free so I brought it in with me and we tested it, so everyone had a go including most of the boys and mentioning no names but the test came back negative. No epilator is pain free. Everyone screamed a little bit but some people liked it.
Any more?
Another time is when everytime we had to film outside in the freezing cold we would all huddle in between takes and as soon as they shouted action we would have to act like it was summer. I found it hilarious. Philip Martin Brown (Grantly Budgen) would also tell us amazing jokes in the morning to start our day off.
Sounds all adventurous. Do you have any scenes that you found the most enjoyable to film?
There are absolutely loads. I can't tell them all. My most favourite scene to film would be where everyone was together in assembly and things or where Aleesha and Danielle were being naughty I think.
Where there any scenes you hated filming?
Scenes that I hated filming? Hmm. No I didn't hate one bit of it well I felt bad when Aleesha was being nasty to Karla.
Who was the most funniest person that kept you all going during the day?
Eva (Rachel Mason) was hilarious during filming, she would put us off with the funny faces she pulls. She is top.
Did you become friends with a lot of your fellow cast members?
We all became really close friends after like the first day of filming so it was like hanging out with friends everyday. It was the best experience ever. I really miss them all.
2 years later and the love for Eva (Rachel Mason) is still going strong. She is by far the most favouratable head. Would you say she was Waterloo Road's best head?
I didn't get must time with Jason Merrells (Jack Rimmer) but I know he was great but I think Eva is amazing. She is my best yes. But don't tell the others. However I love the other teacher's too. I don't have favourites.
Have you continued to watch the show since your departure?
Yes as much as I could. I am still a fan.
That is great. What is your view on the move to Scotland?
Well apart from the cold I loved it in Scotland when we filmed for Waterloo Road Reunited there. It was great.
Were you glad that after your exit from the show you still got to make a re-appearance with Waterloo Road Reunited?
Yes it was so good that everyone had a chance to see what they all got up to after school. It was really fun. I loved it.
It was great chatting to you Lauren. It means a lot. Thank-you for your time and I hope all is well.
No problem. Thank-you.

Exclusive Interview with Luke Bailey (Marley Kelly) - 11.05.2012
Lucky enough, we got the chance to speak directly to Luke Bailey who played Marley Kelly - the eldest brother of the Kelly family in Series 4 of Waterloo Road. Read the interview below to see what he had to say:
Can you remember where you were and how you felt when you got the role of Marley Kelly on the show?
I can't actually remember the call. I remember the auditions and recalls and reading in with Reece Noi (Earl Kelly) but I don't remember the moment I found out. I would have been over the moon I am sure.
You started Waterloo Road at the beginning of series 4 as the eldest child in the Kelly family. What was it like having such a huge part in the show?
There was a lot of responsibility I suppose to be a strong presence on screen, considering the amount of time that was invested in my character but that's the reason I got into acting in all honesty. I was excited as opposed to nervous. Also the cast around me were fantastic so it was a joy to perform with them, which makes the scenes easier to excel in.
The rest of the Kelly’s were sort of ‘bad boy’ type characters. Did you like the fact Marley was mellower, or would you secretly have loved to play a ‘bad boy’ too?
I liked that Marley was the objective foil to Earl's rebellion. He offered some hope to families going through the care system and I think the story needed that. It gave two sides to people like the Kelly's when so often in the media their story is subjective and glib. Part of the charm that drew me to Marley is I thought he probably was a 'bad boy' but never had the time to be with everything else going on.
On your first day of filming. How did you feel? Where you nervous at all?
I never really get nervous filming, more excited. Everyone was so nice there it was difficult to feel worried, I felt instantly at home.
Who would you say you got along with the most whilst on set?
It's difficult to say, I got on well with everyone. I have to say Holly Kenny (Sambuca Kelly) maybe, she has an abundance of talent and felt like a little sister in the time of the show.
We loved Marley, he was such a gentleman. In series 4, Marley was in a relationship with fellow pupil Flick Mellor. You both seemed to get along great on the show, but what was your relationship like off screen?
We have always been friends, since the off as we both have very similar interests, but we're probably a little closer now since we've both left. We see each other a fair amount, we only live around the corner from each other. She's an absolutely fantastic person and I love her to bits.
You played the role of the eldest brother for your 20 episodes in the show. Did your on screen family (The Kelly's) begin to feel like family in real life?
In a way yes, a more harmonious family than the Kelly's, we spent so much time together that year it was difficult not to be.
Aww, that’s great. Sadie (Flick) seems like a lovely girl. What about the other cast members? Who did you get along best with? And are you still in contact with any of them?
I got on with all of them. I already knew Elyes (Rob Cleaver) from working on Casualty. We've been best mates for yonks’, we used to live together, but that's another story for another day. I chat with Chelsee (Janeece) and Jess Bagnall a bit and the rest I see out and about. Me and Smithy (Dean - who played Phili[p Ryan) are working on some scripts for the BBC so we're in regular contact. For the record I hate Tom Milner (Paul Langley), he has table manners and terrible halitosis...I'm joking I love Milner although I'm serious about the table etiquette and bad breath.
The Kelly's had a hell of a tim eon the show. There was many emotional scenes. Did you ever find the scenes emotional when filming them?
Yeah, I like to feed off the natural emotion bouncing around the scenes. I find it heightens my instincts.
Could you possibly tell us where Marley disappeared to? As he just kind of disappeared after series four without a reasonable explanation to leave?
That's an interesting question. I think him and Flick rode off into the sunset somewhere probably away from all the family issues.
Are you aware that there is rumours escalating that Marley's onscreen brother Denzil is killed off the show as a continuation from series seven?
No, I don't watch much TV to be fair, how does he die?
The final episode of Series 7 resulted in them taking a trip to Scotland when a lorry comes swerving around the corner hitting them all. Unfortunetly it's rumoured they all survive apart from Denzil. You are aware that Sambuca died in series 6 of Cancer too? The Kelly's luck couldn't get any worse.
Bit harsh! I knew about Sambuca because they asked me to come back for that episode. The Kelly's have no luck what so ever.
They sure don't. If you don't mind us asking. What was your reason for not returning in that episode?
They never did us any favours so I couldn't be bothered taking time out of my life to do them anymore.
What was your favourite scene to film?
There were so many scenes. The one that sticks out is where Ralf first offers me the money. That was great writing and gave me loads to play with.
Was it difficult to film the scenes where Ralf attacks Marley?
It was wet and cold and every-time we did a take I had to go and get washed and changed. It took ages but I thought it looked pretty good.
The viewers all loved the series 4 finale, when Ralph Mellor bulldozed the school. What was that like to film?
Well I was actually in the choir at that point, so didn't see the bulldozing. I remember the scenes when we got back to the school and saw the damage. They were actually a lot of fun because the whole cast was in at once, so they had novelty of having all your favourite characters in one place...
Would you say you were like your character Marley in any way in real life. Do you compare to him at all?
Hmm... I guess we look pretty similar I suppose. He's all around a miles better human being than me. I'm not a bad person (I don't think) but I'm no Marley...when I was in the show, many women were disappointed by how, and I quote “Eugh, you're nothing like Marley”. For a while I felt like a massive failure that I couldn't live up to his chivalry. But then I realised he wouldn't exist without me and that made me feel better.
Since leaving the show, do you still catch up on it while it’s on TV? If so, which characters do you like currently?
I will not lie, I don't watch it. I don't own a TV, to stop me watching crap. I only watch films and dramas that I like now, things like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, The Wire and Shadow Line. However, whoever is in it I'm sure they're doing an incredible job.
I was expecting that answer. Will we be seeing you in any productions in the future?
Never say never. I don't often go up for meetings for acting anymore. However I have many plays on at the Lowry so my written work is shown quite regularly. I'll be sure to keep you posted.
As everyone is aware, the last ever episode to be filmed in Rochdale was broadcasted last month. What are your opinions on the shows move up to Scotland? Do you think it was time for a change?
I don't think it matters where the show is set. I think it's good to encourage Scottish talent and see regional voices and narratives on our screens. My only concern is that it was a move for money and that the cast and crew who have worked hard on the show for many years were not all considered. Some people only found out about the move through reading it in the BBC press release. However in terms of output and content I think the show will probably be as good as ever.
Well thank-you very much for your time. We loved you on the show - you were a great addition. Keep us posted in the future and take care.

Exclusive Interview with Oliver Lee (Aiden Scotcher) - 11.05.2012
Last night Waterloo TV Road got to speak exclusively to the wonderful Oliver Lee who played Aiden Scotcher in Series 7 of Waterloo Road. We caught up with him and chatted about his time on Waterloo Road, his relation ship with Linze Cocker - who played Jess Fisher and his views on the show. See what Oliver had to say:
When you got offered the job of Aiden Scotcher on Waterloo Road and the chance to work along side Linzey (Jess Fisher - who is also his partner in real life) how did you feel?
Very lucky. I heard another actor had pulled out so I was glad to take their role. Their lose my gain.
That's a bonus. Was it easy to work alongside Linzey as she is your partner in real life?
Yes it was. I am Linzey's biggest fan so it's a pleasure. Would love to be on the same show as her again one day.
That is so cute. What was your favourite scenes to shoot whilst on the show?
I like playing the baddy but not with Linzey. So maybe when they made up in the final couple of scenes.
When filming the romantic scenes between Jess/Chris and Aiden/Vicki did you and Linzey find it difficult to watch each other film the scenes or did you have to accept the fact that it was your job?
No it's always hard when your partner has to kiss someone else. I hate it and don't link watching when Linzey has to do it. No one likes it but you just have to be professional and hope the other actor is also professional. Which they always are.
Was there anyone of the cast members that you didn't particularly get along with or conflict with?
Haha, surely you understand I can't answer that. Good try.
I was expecting that answer. Worth a try though. Apart from Linzey who else did you get along well with on set?
I am notoriously a bit of a loner. Everyone was lovely but I didn't make friends easily. Great cast though.
I understand that it's acing but do you resemble your character Aiden in any way?
Well we look similar. He's fatter than me and we both fancy Jess so erm yes a little.
Ok. You got me laughing there. Have you ever watched the show at all since your departure?
We tuned into the last episode.
What is your view on the move to Scotland? Do you think it will work?
I can't comment sorry but I wish the cast and crew all the very best.
Fair enough. Well thank-you for your time. Was nice chatting to you. We all loved you playing Aiden on the show and love Linzey's portray of Jess. Hope all is well and take care.
Thank-you. It's been a pleasure. I did want to stay on the show for 10 more episodes but I think they decided Aiden wasn't popular. Never mind. Take care. Oli.

Exclusive Interview with Katie Griffiths (Chlo Grainger) - 10.05.2012
Tonight Waterloo TV Road got to speak exclusively to the lovely and beautiful Katie Griffiths who played Chlo Grainger in Series 1 Episode 1 all the way through to Series 4 Epidode 20 of Waterloo Road. We caught up with her and chatted about her time on Waterloo Road and her views on the show. Read the interview below to find out what Katie said:
Hello Katie. Hope your well. Thank-you very much for taking your time out for answering our questions. Here we go. How did you feel when you got told you got the part of playing Chlo Grainger in Waterloo Road?
I felt on top of the world! I'd always wanted to be an actress so much, and when I finally for a lead part I was so happy!
That must of been amazing. What was your most favorable storyline/storylines to film whilst you were on the show?
It was. I loved filming every storyline, but my best was Chlo being pregnant. Just because it proves you can fend for yourself even if you are a teenager, and the drama all the way through the 3rd series also. Very exciting to film
Some of the scens must of been really challengint to film. Many retakes, the weather, etc. What was the most difficult scenes to film?
Definetly! Most of the time the weather was horrible. The most difficult scene was probably my first episode. The crash we had to be very prepared for what was going to happen, even though we had stunt doubles. It was very scary.
The viewers loved the relationship between Chlo and Donte. But how did you get on in real life with Adam Thomas?
Me too. Me and Adam got on so well. We were like brother and sister, I love my Ads!
How would you say you compare to Chlo in real life?
Well I used to be very cocky like Chlo, and I'd say I'm like Chlo in the way she acts as a person.
If you could play any other Waterloo Road character, past or present, who would you choose? And why?
I'd love to have played my on-screen mum Izzie.
I can imagine... Did you and the cast/crew ever have any good banter memories that happened during filming?
We had a lot of banter, we used to play a lot of pranks on each other quite a lot - it was very funny! We was all like a little family.
That is so cute. It must of been emotional when you were filming your final scenes there. How did you feel about leaving the show?
I felt horrible, that set was like my second home I was there nearly every day! I had a great 4 years there though.
I was emotional watching your final scenes. Do you stay in touch with many of the cast members since you left?
I don't really talk to a lot. I see Lauren who played Mika a lot were so close! I occasionaly talk to Camilla who played Lorna Dickey and Jason who played Tom Clarkson and Jill who played Izzie Redpath. We're all definetly meeting up soon though, all of us! From Series 1 to 4.
That will be a lovely reunion.
It sure will be.
Have you ever watched the show at all since your departure?
I watch it occasionally yes.
Do you think its dramatically changed since series 1/2/3/4?
Yes I do, there is a lot more dramatic storylines happening, more than when I was on it anyway.
I totally agree. What's your view on the move to Scotland? Do you think it's a good move for the show or a bad move?
I don't know really. I think it will be a very big chance for everyone as it's always been in Rochdale. It will be extremely weird seeing it in Scotland.
In the past some characters have returned to the show after leaving, if you were given the chance would you ever return? Maybe a trip to see Tom with ‘baby’ Izzie?
Yeah sure I would love to!! If I got asked I definitely would!
Well thank-you very much for your time to answer these questions. It was much appreciated. It's safe to say Chlo and Donte are extremely missed in the show. They made Waterloo Road what it is today.
Your welcome.

So excited, I couldn't believe it because I had always watched the show.
Before you got the part, who were your favorite characters?
Janeece, Bolton, Paul, Sambuca and Grantly.
In your time filming for Waterloo Road, what was your favorite storyline/scenes to film?
Erm! I liked all the bullying stuff with Cel Spellman (Harry Fisher) because it was really deep and also the debate competition in episode 7 but I also enjoyed all the family scenes I did.
Was there any scenes that you found rather challenging to film? Or were the most difficult to film?
Definitely the stuff from my first episode where I ran away - it was December in the Yorkshire Moores were freezing with lots of snow!
Which of the cast members did you get along with the most whilst filming for the show?
Aw everyone was so lovely, there isn't anyone I didn't get along with! But I probably hung out with the younger cast members the most.
Did you ever have a crush on any of the cast members? *cough* Lucien Laviscount? *cough*
Haha no, I was just 13 at the time and with Lucien he was like my older brother in real life to so I could never see him in that way.
How did you feel when you were to film your final scenes?
It was a great six months, I was so sad to have to leave, but I was happy with the experiences I had had that I didn't want to be too sad about it.
Have you watched the show since your departure?
I've watched it sometimes. I try and catch up with it when I can.
What's your view on the show relocating to Scotland?
It will be good to have fresh new characters but I'll miss the old ones too.
I totally agree. Well thank-you for your time. We loved watching you play Ruth on the show. She was a great addition.
Thank-you I enjoyed it.
